Hello and welcome to this toolkit brought to you by The Good Morning Club. First and foremost, I am so genuinely sorry that you are currently dealing with unsafe behaviour. One thing I would like to say before you enter this roadmap is to ensure you demand support from your senior leaders. You should not ever be managing it alone. This toolkit is not ‘the answer’. Every situation and child will be different. But it is the scaffolding. It covers a variety of ways you can support yourself and the child that you most likely were not taught in training. Because that’s what we do here at The Good Morning Club. We support you with the lost modules of behaviour. Want to know how we can support you further? Read more about The Good Morning Club at the end. Sending you love, Jen xx

Our TGMC ethos is always grounded on mindset and perspective. Understanding the why before we can tackle the ‘what’. In this 3 minute training bite Ginny will talk you through the WHY behind unsafe behaviours.

One thing that makes unsafe behaviours extra stressful is they surprise us. They trigger a stress response in ourselves because we aren’t expecting it. Visual support plans are an amazing way to get AHEAD of the behaviours and put a proactive action in place. This provides some peace of mind for all parties.

We simply cannot expect de-esculate and co-regulate every big feeling. It is neither sustainable or helpful for our children. Teaching C.O.R.E coping skills is about supporting our children to build their regulation toolkit and be equipped to support themselves as a life skill. These need to be explicitly taught and explored with children.

Big feelings can feel even more overwhelming when they are public. What we know is, the more overwhelming a feeling gets, the more likely it is going to escalate into unsafe behaviours. So? How can we get ahead of that and proactively plan? Calm spaces are a foundational strategy to ensure children have somewhere to go when they need to regulate. This Calm Space workshop will talk you through everything you need to know but if you want to skip to the set up part just watch from 36 minutes.

Our TGMC ACT framework is a responsive strategy for unsafe behaviour in the classroom. We know teachers need steps to follow on the spot that will support both them and the child. When feelings are high, frameworks take the thinking out of the moment.

When a child’s behaviour is spiralling our response is critical. We have the power to escalate or de-escalate. The key here is to respond. Not react. Easier said than done of course but absolutely a life long skill as an educator. This is something we never truly ‘master’ as of course, we are human! But just by being aware of our response and developing this awareness is such a transformational tool that will make WAVES in our classrooms.

You’ve heard the saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ When it comes to unsafe behaviour, we know there is a why but we cannot have sole responsibility for a child’s actions. If there is any undesirable behaviours, we need to work as a team with parents/caregivers. This ensures strategies, language and approaches are consistent and gives our children the best chance!

Here’s the thing, teaching is stressful. You know this! But, the more stressed we are, the less able we are to draw on our toolbox of strategies . This is because our pre frontal cortex doesn’t function well under stress. So, when it comes to unsafe behaviour, we need to hone in on supporting ourselves. Our amazing TGMC health coach shares 6 strategies in 3 minutes!

I am totally aware that if there has been unsafe behaviours your schools policy is likely to issue a series of consequences. Although, I understand this approach I want to sign post restorative conversations as an alternative/ additional strategy to stop negative cycles with behaviour. Restorative conversations develop empathy, understanding and agreed action plans. Jump to 35 minutes to see the outline.
